Murrumbidgee - Ginninderra Gorges National Park: Information Note 58

Ginninderry Stage 1

Most of you will be aware by now that our appeal against Ginninderry Stage 1 to the ACT Civil and Administrative Appeals Tribunal was withdrawn in February. For us the critical deal was the agreement by all parties involved on further measures to protect the Little Eagle and Scarlet Robin. Dr Steve Debus, a well-known bird expert who has worked on the Little Eagle in New England, has now joined the ACT Government’s Little Eagle Research Panel.

You can find the joint Media Release at Ginninderry Stage 1 gets the green light to proceed.

I would like to thank, first of all, the ACT Environmental Defenders Office for all their work during this period and, secondly, for your patience and trust. In order for us to observe proper judicial process, we could not keep you involved or properly informed.

Parkwood Development Application in NSW

The Yass Valley Council referred the Parkwood DA to the NSW Government for assessment back in October. We expected the application to be returned for public consultation early this year so that the matter could be resolved by April. From the beginning of this year we have set up an information stall each weekend at Yass, Murrumbateman and Hall Markets to advise NSW and ACT residents about the implications for the bio-diversity, fire risk and civic administration of any suburban development just across the ACT border along the Ginninderra Gorge.

The response to our concerns have been very positive and we were able to obtain many signatures asking for the current re-zoning not to proceed until further research is undertaken. Caution alone should dictate a much smaller urban footprint in this area.

The Parkwood Development Application now has a further one year extension and a decision is expected later this year.

Objection to the EIS Exemption application

Thanks to everyone who put in their objection to exempt the rest of Ginninderry's development applications from having to provide an Environmental Impact Statement. A copy of our submission is now on our website. Notwithstanding the significant effort from the Ginninderry Project Team, you can see here that there are still many outstanding environmental issues to be addressed.

Cheers,

Darryl Seto
(for the Ginninderra Falls Committee)
