Saving Ginninderra Falls and the Murrumbidgee Gorge from urban expansion
This time around we will have a panel of speakers who will each give a short presentation which then will be followed by an open forum. So come along to hear what others have to offer and to add your own comments.
The public meeting will be at the Cook Community Hub, 41 Templeton St Cook on Tuesday 31 May from 5:30 to 7:00.
Invitation to comment on urban development at West Belconnen, ACT & NSW
Some of you will already have caught the notice in the Canberra Times on 14 May 2016. The (Commonwealth) Department of Environment is seeking everyone's ideas about the West Belconnen/Parkwood Development.
We will be preparing a submission shortly and will add our response to the website when completed. My guess is that we will touch on water quality, endangered species (especially the Rosenberg monitor) and the visual impact of the proposed urban spaces.
Protected Area Governance and Management
Dr Doug Finlayson has prepared a summary of an ANU paper delivered at the International Union for Conservation of Nature conference in Sydney in 2014. The ideas presented in this paper express 'world-best practice' and so is very useful to guage our own local development here in West Belconnen. One example is the need to assess sight lines, that is, to not allow inappropriate urban development to degrade the visual impact of the Murrumbidgee River corridor and the Ginninderra Falls.
Well worth the read.
Cheers,
Darryl Seto
(for the Ginninderra Falls Committee)
