Murrumbidgee - Ginninderra Gorges National Park: Information Note 67

This newsletter comes with the sad news of the loss of two people who have provided assistance of different kinds over the years. Recently, on 30 Jan 2021, was the death of Jerry Olsen, a long-time researcher of the Little Eagle. His work was relevant to our concerns about the Ginninderry proposal to build housing adjacent to a large tree behind the Strathnairn Arts Centre which was used for nesting by a pair of Little Eagles. There is a likelihood that such development could deter future use of the tree and others around it, thus reducing the nesting areas available to the Little Eagle.

Someone who provided significant support to GFA from its beginning was Shirley Gourgaud, who died suddenly and unexpectedly on 11 Dec 2020. Shirley, as President of the Belconnen Community Council, was instrumental in the creation of the GFA. Once the association was incorporated, she continued to support our activities over the years as a member. At our last AGM, Shirley volunteered to join the committee and was accepted.

Our condolences are extended to the families of both these community-minded people.

When Shirley was elected to the GFA committee, little did she or anyone else expect her death only three weeks later. This leaves a vacancy on the committee. We, therefore, ask everyone to consider volunteering to fill this position for the rest of the year. If you are interested, please contact either me or our Public Officer, Darryl Seto, at public-officer at
